What is Naturopathy

‘Nature, through which the Almighty rules the universe, has done everything necessary to provide human beings with what their bodies need’.

Dr Benedict Lust (1872-1945)
Father of Naturopathy

The World Health Organization defines health as ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’.

In ancient times, the most important branch of medicine lies not in the treatment of sicknesses, but places greater emphasis on a healthful manner of life. The Chinese termed this branch of medicine as health preservation while the Greeks categorize it as dietetics.

In modern era, people in advanced countries such as Australia, USA, Germany and Japan have started to use natural ways to treat and prevent chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, stroke, heart diseases and viral infection etc. Rather than suppressing the symptoms, naturopathy promotes self-healing, which has a lasting effect on our long-term health and quality of life.

Optimal health recovery for the afflicted can only be achieved among those who adopt a lifestyle change and enhancing the self-healing potential of our bodies.

NATUROPATHY, A DRUGLESS THERAPY, is a health or medical system that can be traced back to ancient Greece and Roman times and modernized by 19th century German nature cure doctors such as Vincent Priessnitz, Father Sebastian Kneipp, Dr Benedict Lust and Dr Lindlahr etc.

It is based on the principle that, given the right conditions (plant foods, sunlight, pure water, rest, exercise and herbs), our bodies have the innate ability to heal itself. Nature is the best doctor and our role is to cooperate, so that our bodies will heal by themselves. It is a holistic medicine, as integrating balance in our body, mind and soul is the key to complete healing.

According to a research project entitled ‘The risks and regulatory requirements of Naturopathy and Western herbal medicine’, released in August 2006 by the Victorian department of health services (Australia), the researchers concluded that there is evidence of benefits of Naturopathy and Western Herbal Medicine for almost every body system and all major illnesses.

The researchers found that the medicine used by Naturopaths and Western herbal medicine practitioners can be effective, and therefore the practice of naturopathy and western herbal medicine can equally be effective.

Naturopathy is not only a medical system, but a form of wellness spirituality. For example, a person may use herbs and naturopathy to treat her eczema but also learn how to lead a healthy life, build body awareness, learn how to cope with stress, cultivate self- control, practices ecological health and spiritual awareness.
